Fair use and copyright issues

CITY-Leaders:

Please check out this page. It gives us guidelines on what information we can use on our lists without violating intellectual property rights. They have a four part test to see if what we're using would make someone angry enough to sue us.

Now this other page is not only informative, it's actually funny. It's the "Crash Course for Copyright". Drop down menus let you choose whether it is "words, images, graphs" etc that you want to copy. Then there's another drop down menu that says, "Sure it's the law but don't let that..... scrare, bore, worry, disgust, bother, anger....you."

If a list member posts something to our lists that you feel may violate a copyright issue, then it's your responsibility to inform them. Share these links. Do a google on "fair use" or "Copyright" or "Intellectual property" and see what you can learn to share with your list.

If you're the one who is violating copyright, then you put your list into harm's way. As CITY-Leaders we can't set the precedent on the list of this copyright infringement behavior.

Case in point: There was this Printies list, miniature cut outs, very busy, tons of people on it. Problem was what was being sent through were obvioius violations of "licensed" material. Nascar logos, Football and other sports logos. It made some of the list members there right nervous. A ClayMate wrote to me saying "I fear that there are copyright violations going on the printies list." She unsubbed rather than be there.

Let me repeat that... she unsubbed rather than be there.

Will we loose list members because we are uninformed about copyright issues? That's the second danger after getting sued by some commercial organization that is pissed off at us.

I am sending this out on Special Notice because it is important for us to be informed about such stuff. We don't want to be sued, we don't want to loose list members who get nervous either.

Thanks,

xoxo
