When developing policy and guidelines for the CITY-List Family it
occurred to me that each list should have one representative to give
voice in developing these things.
One list - One Rep - One Vote on the Founder's list.
Guidelines for the CITY-List Family so far have been formed by the
old ClayArtMods and Kathy Leah. Input was from everyone who at that
time were forming the first batch of CITY Lists.
This CITY-Leader's list is for getting training and learning across
the list policy. I do expect most of you to go on Digest or Special
Notice when you're ready to fly solo, so posts like this can reach
you and you can focus on building your lists.
The CITY-ListFounders will be for each list to have a vote on
guidelines going forward from this point.
Your list and mod teams can voice issues to your List Representative
after discussing it amongst yourselves. Issues can be addressed on
the Founder's list at any time. All the list's reps will be able to
give their input. All the lists can have a hand in shaping our
future together. Before we create an overall guideline there needs
to be a consensus that includes all the lists in the family.
In order to be your list's rep, we need some way to know that the
other CITY-Leaders of your list agree. One person can't come in and
say "I'll represent the booger flicker's list" and not discuss it
with the "booger flicker's mod team".
This will test whether your mod team can work as a group. If one
person seeks to take over all the decision making policy and make
the other mods on the team feel bulldozed, you'll find out fast when
picking a rep. If you have concerns with anyone on your team, best
bring it up at this point. You need to trust each on your mod team
to work together peacefully and not just hang out and look the other
way when there's things to be done. That's so we can all take
breaks, get sick, care for family, move to another home, go through
divorce, and the others on your mod team you can trust to do the
right thing.
If you are on many CITY-List teams, share the work to avoid burn
out. If you represent one list-one vote on the Founder's list, then
allow the other CITY-Leaders on your other mod teams to represent
another list. To have one person representing 3-4-5- lists brings us
back to the problem that the old list family had. Decisions held in
the hand of the few to guide the list lives of the many. That way if
one person gets ill, can't put in the time required, all those lists
go unrepresented.
One List, One Rep, One Vote on the Founder's list.
Be ready to be involved. The Founder's list is not a list to go on
No Mail or Special Notice. For as you've learned from being here on
the CITY-Leader's list there's more to running a list behind the
scenes than most folks think. So too with developing policy for
guiding a list family, there's more to making decisions that effect
all of the lists in this list family than a unilateral decision made
by one person.
For the record: I did not conceive the name of the list family. I
did not conceive of the list family motto. They came from a
brainstorming session with the first batch of CITY-Leaders. The
guidelines we have so far were approved of the starter group of CITY-Leaders before becoming policy. The welcome letter template was not
made by me.
I am setting the example of sharing the training, the decisions and
policy making. I want to insure that all lists involved with this
list family concur on a policy that will effect all the lists.
There are List Family issues needing attention right now regarding:
Banning known trouble makers who seek to hurt this list family.
Or allowing known trouble makers to join any CITY list and wait for
them to act out and then deal with them.
How should we deal with them? Moderate them and engage in off
list "One to One" cc'ing your mod team? Should you cc' the Founder's
list so we're your witnesses to the effort to find a peaceful
resolution?
When I had to have "one to one" email exchange with a list member
who was having difficulty I shared it with the ClayArtMods in a cc,
that way they knew when things were resolved peacefully or if we
needed to keep a list member on moderated status and why.
If a list member gets banned on your list, should you or should you
not share that person's email address so the rest of the lists can
be protected? If so, it should be shared with the Founder's list so
every list knows. What will be our response across all the CITY
lists?
Should we inoculate each new CITY list with bans of known trouble
maker's email addresses at the birth of each new CITY list?
Should we do it by a case by case decision of the Mod teams on each
list? Which was one of the problems with the old list family.
These sort of discussions are not relevant here on CITY-Leaders,
where training is going on and guidelines set are in place. These
need to be addressed in the Founder's list. So please don't respond
to these issues here. Join the Founder's list after you discuss it
with your mod teams.
If your list is not represented on the Founder's list, we also got
to address that issue. Without representation, input in guidelines
for the list family, then will you complain if you need to have your
list comply with what every other CITY list agrees to?
What should we do as a List Family in that case? Non-involvement was
the problem with the leader's list I was part of. Leaders didn't
lead, there was no team effort in developing policy, when policy was
decided by a handful of active leaders there were other leaders who
got hostile and resistant to any effort to have a unified vision and
goal for the list family. Unilateral decisions were made by one
person. Owners were added to lists without the existing
Moderator/Owner being consulted. Hurt feelings ensued.
I am aiming to give everyone a chance to be part of the shaping of
this list family. Each list needs to be represented in developing
policy.
So CITY-Leaders, discuss with your mod teams, pick a rep, have that
rep join the CITY-ListFounders, let your list's issues be heard,
help shape this community with the backing of your list members and
mod teams.
With developing a representational governing body with all list's
voices heard, we are going to build a community that has consistency
across the whole list family. A list member can't join one CITY
list, be a pill and act out, and then expect they can join another
CITY list and do the same thing, thinking that we don't communicate
with each other.
We have a way to communicate with each list to set policy.
Every large gathering of individuals a representative governing body
is needed for smooth operation. This is our way of providing that
forum.
If you have an active problem and need feed back immediately, my
rule is to Moderate folks, write to them to see what is their
boggle, iron it out, share it with the mod team at every step. Most
times you will be able to solve the issue within your list with the
help of your mod team.
If you have a big problem that's setting you list off center. Write
to me directly. I'll come in to your aid.
The Clay list has been peaceful for so long that when back last
September I got slandered by someone no one knew, I didn't bother to
engage in a defensive tactic and start a flame war. I Moderated the
individual, wrote to her off list, found she was in no mood to be
peaceful no matter what. So I showed her the door, banned her email
address and all the while the ClayArtMods knew what was going on.
The result on the list was list members came to my defense
saying, "That's nonsense, you don't know NJ."
One trouble maker in years of running a list. And that nasty post
generated a flood of positive responses. So we can take lemons and
make them into lemonade.
With the Founder's list I hope we can prevent even that one nasty
event from happening on our lists. It takes work to provide a
peaceful environment where artists, designers, alchemists, and
dieters can be calm enough to do what they need to do.
Lastly, we have time. Time to discuss this with your mod teams. Time
to pick a rep. Time to gather issues to share with the Founder's
list. Time to get feed back to help you guide your list in a way
that all the lists in the family can take as an example.
Thank you for reading this Special Notice.
xoxo
